Chest freezer vs upright — Wh / runtime honesty

Size a portable station for a chest freezer vs an upright: average Wh, compressor start surge, and why chests often coast longer with the lid shut. Passive thaw bands: freezer thaw hours. Fridge cousin: fridge runtime.

Chest vs upright (power maths)

  • Chest freezers usually lose less cold air when opened (cold sinks). With the lid shut they often cycle less — lower average watts than many uprights of similar litres.
  • Uprights dump more cold air on every door open and often run frost-free heaters — higher Wh over a blackout night.
  • Wh buys hours; surge starts the compressor. Same rule as the fridge page: mid-size boxes can fail at start even with Wh left.
  • Full freezers hold longer passively — see thaw hours before you burn battery 24/7.
  • Duty-cycle recoveries (run 1–2 h, then coast) stretch Wh vs continuous compressor duty.

Runtime estimates

Hours ≈ (rated Wh × 0.85) ÷ average freezer watts while cycling.

Chest ~60 W avg

~4–29 h

286 Wh ≈ 4 h · 1,024 Wh ≈ 14 h · 2,048 Wh ≈ 29 h (estimates)

Upright / frost-free ~100 W avg

~2.4–17 h

1 kWh ≈ overnight class; 2 kWh multi-day buffer (estimates)

Pulse recoveries

Stretch Wh

1–2 h on battery → lid shut coast — see also thaw hours

Comparison: freezer-duty stations

Filter by Wh class. Prefer ≥2,400 W surge for older compressors.

Model Wh · AC / surge Est. @ 60–100 W Chest / upright honesty Approx. USD
EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus Pulse 286 Wh · 600 W (X-Boost 1,200 W) ~2–4 h (est.) Recovery pulses only — not a full freezer night. Surge may still fail older compressors. ~$180–300
Anker SOLIX C300 288 Wh · 300 W Usually too thin Continuous W often below freezer start/run — fridge/freezer → bigger box. ~$200–280
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 Chest night 1,070 Wh · 1,500 W / 3,000 W surge ~9–15 h class (est.) Overnight floor for many chest freezers; uprights eat Wh faster. ~$499–589
BLUETTI Elite 100 V2 1,024 Wh · 1,800 W (lifting 2,700 W) ~8–14 h class (est.) Same 1 kWh food-safety floor as fridge runtime. ~$380–500
Anker SOLIX C1000 Expand 1,056 Wh → 2,112 Wh ~9–15 h · ~2× expanded Add pack when thaw risk spans a second night. ~$400–600
EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus 1,024 Wh · 1,800 W / 3,600 W surge ~8–14 h solo · expand Stronger surge path for stubborn compressors; expand / solar for multi-day. ~$600–900+
BLUETTI AC200L Buffer 2,048 Wh · 2,400 W class ~17–29 h (est.) Best Wh in this set for upright / warm-garage blackouts — still keep doors shut. ~$800–1,100
