Storm / blackout prep power station kit (fridge + lights + router + phone)

Before the forecast hits, size one station for the essentials stack: keep food cold, lights on, Wi‑Fi up, and phones charged. This page uses labelled Wh estimates — not lab guarantees — so you can pick a kit class before landfall.

Essentials load budget (planning watts)

Use a kill‑a‑watt if you can; otherwise start with these planning averages:

  • Fridge (cycling avg). ~50–150 W average; surge often 3–7× running watts at compressor start — need AC continuous + surge headroom.
  • LED lights. ~10–20 W for a couple of bulbs or a lantern string.
  • Router + modem / ONT. ~10–30 W continuous for Wi‑Fi.
  • Phone charging. ~5–15 W while charging; prefer USB ports.

Rough stack for evening storm (fridge + lights + router + phone): about 80–200 W average depending on fridge. Usable battery ≈ rated Wh × 0.85. Specs from manufacturer pages (checked Oct 2026).

Wh needed (estimates)

Formula: hours ≈ (rated Wh × 0.85) ÷ average watts. These are estimates for planning a kit — door opens, fridge age, and inverter losses change everything.

Essentials only (no fridge)

~40 W avg

Router 15 W + lights 15 W + phones 10 W → ~300 Wh ≈ 6 h · ~1,000 Wh ≈ 21 h

Fridge + essentials (light fridge)

~100 W avg

Fridge 60 W avg + 40 W stack → ~1,000 Wh ≈ 8–9 h · ~2,000 Wh ≈ 17 h

Fridge + essentials (heavier)

~180 W avg

Fridge 120–150 W avg + stack → ~1,000 Wh ≈ 4–5 h · ~2,000 Wh ≈ 9–10 h

Comparison: storm kit stations

Filter by job size. Prefer surge ≥ fridge start; expandable units for multi-day storms.

QuietWatt is independent. We do not sell these products. Food safety: a closed fridge typically holds ~4 h; follow local civil-defence guidance. Specs and prices change — verify on the official product URL before buying.

Pre-storm checklist

  • Charge the station to 100% while the grid is up; top up power banks too.
  • Disable AC “auto off / eco” so a cycling fridge does not put the inverter to sleep.
  • Know fridge surge watts; stagger microwave / kettle — one heavy load at a time.
  • Prioritize: phones + radio + lights → router → fridge (if capacity allows).
  • Keep the station dry, indoors, and clear of exits — no petrol generators in apartments.
