Keep Wi‑Fi / modem up in a blackout
Outages kill the internet at the wall wart — not always at the street. Size a station for modem / ONT + router (and mesh nodes), know UPS vs portable station, and the mesh caveats that surprise people.
What actually needs power
- Modem / ONT / gateway. Cable modem, fibre ONT, or ISP combo box — often ~8–20 W. If this brick dies, nothing else matters.
- Wi‑Fi router. ~5–15 W typical for a single unit.
- Mesh satellites. Each node is another 5–15 W — three-pack mesh can rival a laptop. Power every node you care about, or accept dead rooms.
- ISP street power. Battery at home does not revive a dark neighbourhood node. Your station only helps when the last-mile is still lit.
Typical single-gateway + router: ~15–30 W continuous. Specs below from manufacturer pages (checked Oct 2026). For laptop + monitor stacks see WFH outage.
UPS vs portable power station
- Classic UPS. Great for flicker / minutes of bridge so Zoom doesn’t drop on a blip. Wh is tiny — often not an all-evening Wi‑Fi plan.
- Portable station with UPS / EPS mode. Sub‑20 ms switchover plus hundreds of Wh — the usual QuietWatt answer for multi-hour blackouts.
- Don’t daisy-chain UPS → station unless both makers say it’s OK.
- USB-C routers. Some modern gear takes USB-C PD — you can skip AC inverter losses if the station has a high enough PD port.
Mesh caveats
- Power the primary + every satellite you need, or coverage shrinks to one room.
- PoE injectors / switches add watts — include them in the budget.
- Guest / IoT SSIDs don’t need extra Wh; extra APs do.
- Phone hotspot is the fallback when the ISP path is dark — charge the phone on the same station.
Wh math (estimates)
Hours ≈ (rated Wh × 0.85) ÷ average watts.
Modem + router (~20 W)
Gateway + 2 mesh nodes (~40 W)
+ Phone charge (~10 W extra)
Comparison: Wi‑Fi blackout stations
Filter by outage length. Prefer UPS-class switchover if flickers drop your VoIP.
| Model | Wh · UPS | Est. modem+router | Mesh / notes | Approx. USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus Compact | 286 Wh · UPS <10 ms | ~12 h @ 20 W (est.) | Fine for single router; expand before big mesh. | ~$180–300 |
| Anker SOLIX C300 | 288 Wh | ~12 h @ 20 W (est.) | Closet-shelf Wi‑Fi kit; watch continuous W on chunky gateways. | ~$200–280 |
| Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 Quiet | 1,070 Wh · UPS <20 ms | ~40+ h @ 20 W (est.) | Comfortable mesh budget; quiet for hallway placement. | ~$499–589 |
| BLUETTI Elite 100 V2 | 1,024 Wh · UPS ≤10 ms | ~40 h @ 20 W (est.) | Fast switchover for finicky ONTs. | ~$380–500 |
| Anker SOLIX C1000 Expand | 1,056 Wh · UPS <20 ms | ~40 h @ 20 W · double with pack | Add battery when mesh + phones share the box for days. | ~$400–600 |
| EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus | 1,024 Wh expandable · UPS <10 ms | Wi‑Fi is trivial; leftover Wh for lights / fridge | Storm kit hub — see storm kit. | ~$600–900+ |
| BLUETTI AC200L | 2,048 Wh | Days of modem+router (est.) | Overkill for Wi‑Fi alone; great shared house battery. | ~$800–1,100 |
QuietWatt is independent. Runtime figures are estimates — ISP uptime is not guaranteed by any battery.
