Home office: UPS vs portable power station

Desk setup focus — PC / NUC / laptop dock + monitor + router. Classic UPS wins on surge / flicker; portable stations win on runtime. Full WFH stack math: work-from-home outage.

How this differs from the WFH page

  • WFH outage = end-to-end remote-work day (laptop + router + monitor Wh classes).
  • This page = buying decision between a desk UPS and a portable station: surge protection vs multi-hour runtime, VA vs Wh confusion, and when to run both.

Surge vs runtime (the real trade)

  • Surge / transfer time. Line-interactive UPS and many station “UPS modes” aim for <10–20 ms so desktops don’t reboot. That protects against flickers — it does not buy a three-hour meeting.
  • Runtime / Wh. A 650 VA desk UPS might only hold ~200–400 Wh equivalent — minutes under a gaming PC. A 1 kWh portable station is hours at 100–150 W desk draw.
  • VA ≠ W ≠ Wh. UPS marketing in VA overstates usable watts; stations market Wh more directly. Compare apples carefully.
  • PC PSU surge. Desktops spike on boot / GPU load. Prefer stations with surge ≥ 2× steady desk watts, or keep the tower on a UPS and the router on the station.
  • Don’t daisy-chain UPS → station unless both manuals allow it.

Specs below from manufacturer pages (checked Oct 2026). Runtime figures are estimates.

When each wins

Desk UPS wins

Flicker / shutdown

Clean OS shutdown, AVR for brownouts, tiny footprint under the desk — weak for multi-hour blackouts.

Portable station wins

Hours of work

UPS-class switchover plus hundreds–thousands of Wh; move to another room; charge phones too.

Both

Common apt setup

Small UPS on the PC + station on modem/router / longer outages. See also Wi‑Fi backup.

Desk Wh estimates

Hours ≈ (rated Wh × 0.85) ÷ average watts.

Laptop dock + monitor + router (~90 W)

~2.7–19 h

286 Wh ≈ 2.7 h · 1,024 Wh ≈ 9.5 h (estimates)

Small desktop + monitor (~150 W)

~1.6–11 h

1 kWh ≈ half–full workday; 2 kWh for long outages (estimates)

Gaming PC (~400 W+)

Minutes–few hours

Needs high continuous W and Wh — often UPS for safe shutdown + station for network only.

Comparison: portable stations as desk UPS alternatives

Filter by runtime goal. Prefer advertised UPS / EPS <20 ms for towers.

Model Wh · UPS AC / surge vs desk UPS Est. @ ~90–150 W Approx. USD
EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus Compact 286 Wh · UPS <10 ms 600 W (X-Boost 1,200 W) Beats tiny UPS on Wh for laptop desks; short for desktops. ~1.5–2.7 h (est.) ~$180–300
Anker SOLIX C300 288 Wh 300 W class Router + laptop brick; skip hungry towers. ~1.5–2.5 h light desk (est.) ~$200–280
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 Quiet desk 1,070 Wh · UPS <20 ms 1,500 W / 3,000 W surge Runtime crushes a VA UPS; surge OK for many small desktops. ~6–10 h (est.) ~$499–589
BLUETTI Elite 100 V2 1,024 Wh · UPS ≤10 ms 1,800 W Fast transfer for picky PSUs; quiet light load. ~6–9 h (est.) ~$380–500
Anker SOLIX C1000 Expand 1,056 Wh · UPS <20 ms 1,800 W / 2,400 W surge Workday now; extra battery when storms last past Slack. ~6–10 h · ~2× expanded ~$400–600
EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus 1,024 Wh expandable · UPS <10 ms 1,800 W / 3,600 W surge Desk + house loads; expand instead of a louder generator. Workday solo; multi-day with packs ~$600–900+
BLUETTI AC200L 2,048 Wh 2,400 W class Long runtime for desktop + monitor; heavy under-desk. ~11–19 h @ 90–150 W (est.) ~$800–1,100
