NAS / home-lab blackout — Wh honesty

Continuous draw beats a laptop — Synology / QNAP / class mini PCs sip watts but never sleep like a closed lid. Prefer graceful shutdown scripts over hoping a tiny UPS lasts the outage. Heavier than laptop blackout; distinct from a desk home office UPS.

Graceful shutdown vs UPS — home-lab is always-on Wh

  • Typical continuous draw. Many 2–4 bay NAS boxes idle ~15–40 W; busy RAID / Docker stacks ~40–80 W+. Class mini PCs (NUC / Beelink / Intel N-series labs) often ~10–35 W idle, more under VMs. Measure once with a plug meter — nameplate lies.
  • Graceful shutdown beats a dead UPS. A classic desk UPS buys minutes for Synology/QNAP UPS / NUT scripts to sync and power off cleanly. Multi-hour blackouts need a portable station’s Wh — same UPS-vs-station story as home office UPS.
  • Always-on ≠ laptop duty cycle. A closed laptop may draw near-zero; a NAS / home-lab keeps spinning disks, fans, and services. Budget continuous watts, not “half a workday of PD.” See laptop blackout for the lighter path.
  • Network is the silent gate. Remote access, camera NVR clients, and smart-home talk need the modem/router up — size that on Wi‑Fi / modem backup. Camera stacks: security camera backup. Gaming desktops are a different continuous class — gaming PC UPS.
  • Don’t daisy-chain UPS → station unless both makers say it’s OK. Spin-down / hibernate policies help Wh but still plan for unclean shutdowns if the station empties mid-write.

Specs from manufacturer pages (checked Oct 2026). Runtime figures are estimates. Not IT, storage, or data-integrity advice — follow NAS / OS OEM manuals and test shutdown scripts on a clear day.

NAS / home-lab Wh estimates

Hours ≈ (rated Wh × 0.85) ÷ continuous load watts · always-on math, not laptop PD duty cycle.

NAS idle ~25 W

Overnight–day+

286 Wh ≈ ~9–10 h · 1 kWh ≈ ~34 h usable (est.)

+ Modem / router ~20 W

Stack ~45 W

~1 kWh ≈ ~18–20 h — size Wi‑Fi too

Vs laptop / desk UPS / gaming PC

Continuous wins

Laptop lighter; desk UPS short; gaming PC far heavier

Comparison: NAS / home-lab honesty

Filter by continuous always-on fit — graceful shutdown scripts still matter on every tier.

Model Wh · continuous AC NAS / lab fit Vs office / laptop / Wi‑Fi honesty Approx. USD
EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus Short 286 Wh · 600 W Often a quiet evening on ~25 W NAS; thin for all-day RAID + router. Still useful as UPS-class bridge + short Wh — vs desk UPS. ~$180–300
Anker SOLIX C300 288 Wh · 300 W Compact closet shelf; Wh is the soft gate for multi-hour labs. Prioritize modem on DC if remote access first — Wi‑Fi. ~$200–280
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 Overnight 1,070 Wh · 1,500 W Comfortable overnight NAS + light extras (estimates). Always-on beats laptop duty — still size Wi‑Fi. ~$499–589
BLUETTI Elite 100 V2 1,024 Wh · 1,800 W Similar ~1 kWh overnight math — measure NAS watts once. Mid path without gaming-desktop waste — vs gaming PC. ~$380–500
Anker SOLIX C1000 Expand 1,056 Wh → 2,112 Wh · 1,800 W Expand packs help multi-day NAS + NVR + router stacks. Add camera / smart-home hub loads before promising the week. ~$400–600
EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus 1,024 Wh · 1,800 W class Solid overnight NAS + router + phone/LED extras. Still skip gaming-desktop budgets — gaming PC. ~$600–900+
BLUETTI AC200L Best headroom 2,048 Wh · 2,400 W class Best Wh in this set for long outages + NAS + network + storm extras. Pair with storm kit stacks — still not a whole-home promise. ~$800–1,100
