Work-from-home blackout backup (laptop + router + monitor)

Keep the standup alive when the grid drops: size a station for laptop + Wi‑Fi + monitor, know when a classic UPS is enough, and when a portable LiFePO₄ station buys multi-hour meeting cover.

WFH load stack (planning watts)

Use a kill‑a‑watt if you can; otherwise start here:

  • Laptop (charging while working). ~45–90 W typical for thin/ultrabook to mid-power machines; gaming laptops much higher.
  • Router + modem / ONT. ~10–30 W continuous — this is the meeting-critical piece.
  • External monitor. ~15–40 W for a modern 24–27" LCD; OLEDs and big 4K panels can run higher.
  • Desk extras. Webcam, desk lamp, phone charge: often +10–25 W.

Typical WFH stack (laptop + router + one monitor): about 80–150 W average. Usable battery ≈ rated Wh × 0.85. Specs from manufacturer pages (checked Oct 2026).

UPS vs portable power station

  • Classic UPS (line-interactive / online). Best for seconds-to-minutes bridge: clean shutdown, no Zoom freeze on brief flickers. Typical desktop UPS packs are 300–1,000 VA with limited Wh — great for switchover, weak for a 3-hour outage.
  • Portable power station with UPS / EPS mode. Many EcoFlow / Anker / BLUETTI / Jackery units advertise <10–20 ms switchover plus hundreds to thousands of Wh. That covers both flicker protection and multi-hour WFH.
  • When to keep both. A small UPS on the PC + a larger station for router / lights / longer outages is a common apartment setup. Don’t daisy-chain UPS → station unless the makers say it’s OK.
  • ISP caveats. Battery on your gear does not restore a dead neighbourhood node — cable / fibre ONT still needs power at your wall, but if the street is up and your house is dark, the station wins.

Runtime figures below are estimates for planning — screen brightness, CPU load, and Wi‑Fi radios change draw.

Wh needed for a work block (estimates)

Formula: hours ≈ (rated Wh × 0.85) ÷ average watts.

Router only (~20 W)

~12–87 h

286 Wh ≈ 12 h · 1,024 Wh ≈ 43 h · 2,048 Wh ≈ 87 h (estimates)

Laptop + router (~90 W)

~2.7–19 h

286 Wh ≈ 2.7 h · 1,024 Wh ≈ 9.5 h · 2,048 Wh ≈ 19 h (estimates)

Full desk (~120 W)

~2–14.5 h

Laptop 70 W + monitor 25 W + router 15 W + odds 10 W → 1 kWh class ≈ full workday margin

Comparison: WFH / UPS-class stations

Filter by outage length. Prefer UPS <20 ms if you hate mid-call flickers.
