NZ vanlife week power (fridge + lights + phone)
Beyond the campervan shortlist: size a station for a full week of freedom camping with a 12 V fridge, LED lights, and phones — plus a solar tip that matches NZ / AU sunny-day reality. Estimates only.
How this differs from the campervan page
- Campervan page = ~1 kWh head-to-head for vans (weight, max solar, fridge ports).
- This page = week-budget Wh math (fridge + lights + phone), when to step up to ~2 kWh / expandables, and a practical solar recovery tip for DOC-adjacent and freedom camps.
- NZ / AU buyers: confirm 230 V local SKUs and local retailers — US listings in the table are for specs, not a shipping promise.

Week load budget (planning watts)
- 12 V compressor fridge. ~30–60 W average cycling; hotter Northland / inland AU days push higher. Plan ~40–50 W avg for mild NZ South Island shoulder season.
- LED lights. ~5–15 W for evenings only (~3 h/night).
- Phones + small USB. ~10–20 Wh/day per person is a lazy planning band; measure if you tether hard.
- Laptop work days. Add ~40–80 W while working — optional; exclude from the base week if you’re offline.
Base week stack (fridge-heavy, lights + phones, no laptop): about ~45–70 W average around the clock when the fridge dominates. Usable Wh ≈ rated Wh × 0.85 (AC path) or closer to rated on efficient 12 V fridge ports.
Week Wh math (label: estimates)
Rough day draw: fridge 50 W × 24 h ≈ 1,200 Wh/day before solar — that is why solar is not optional for a true week off-grid. With solar covering daytime fridge, overnight borrow is what the battery must hold.

Sunny recovery tip
These are estimates for shopping — door opens, fridge age, and Southland winter change everything. A watt meter on the fridge for one night beats any table.
Solar tip for NZ freedom camping
- Park for the panel, not just the view. Northern sky in NZ — keep the foldable unshaded through midday.
- Voltage window matters. Series two 100 W panels only if the station’s PV input voltage range allows it (see Jackery 16–60 V vs EcoFlow / BLUETTI wider windows).
- Alternator assist on drive days. EcoFlow-class car charge paths help when you reposition between camps; still don’t idle for hours in quiet reserves.
- Quiet / no fumes. Generators are the wrong culture fit for DOC-adjacent and many freedom sites — LiFePO₄ + solar is the product.
Comparison: week-capable vanlife stations
Filter by how many low-sun days you want as buffer.
| Model | Wh · weight | Max solar | Week fit (est.) | Vanlife note | Approx. USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 Lightest 1 kWh | 1,070 Wh · 10.8 kg | 400 W max | Overnight fridge margin + sunny-day solar top-up. Cloudy multi-day: tight without big panels / discipline. | 12 V / 10 A car port. Best seat-stash unit on the campervan page — week trips need honest solar. | ~$499–519 |
| BLUETTI Elite 100 V2 Quiet | 1,024 Wh · ~25 lb | See BLUETTI PV input for SKU | Same overnight class; quiet fan for stealth camps near others. | Pair with ≥200 W foldable when fridge runs hard. | ~$380–500 |
| Anker SOLIX C1000 Expand path | 1,056 Wh · ~28 lb → 2,112 Wh |
Anker solar input (see page) | Start at 1 kWh; add battery before a West Coast wet week. | Strong “buy once, expand later” van build. | ~$400–600 |
| EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus Solar king | 1,024 Wh · 12.5 kg → ~5 kWh |
1,000 W max PV | Week trips with real panels: best max-solar headroom in this set. Expand when staying put through rain. | 800 W car / alternator path for drive days between camps. | ~$600–900+ |
| BLUETTI AC200L Cloudy buffer | 2,048 Wh · ~28 kg | Strong PV class (see BLUETTI) | Est. usable ~1,740 Wh — multi-night fridge buffer without expanding day one. | Heavier floor unit; worth it for winter South Island weeks. | ~$800–1,100 |
| EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus Day trips | 286 Wh · ~4.7 kg → 858 Wh |
Modest vs DELTA class | Phones + lights + short fridge only. Not a week fridge house battery alone. | Good secondary / cabin day bag beside a larger van station. | ~$180–300 |
