How long will a power station run an electric blanket?

An electric blanket is the cheapest way to stay warm in a winter outage. NZ/AU blankets are typically rated about 60–160 W (single to queen/king with dual controls) on high. Most of the night they run on a low setting, which uses far less.

The useful numbers

  • Read the label. The controller or the tag at the foot of the blanket shows its rated watts. That is the maximum, on the highest setting.
  • Pre-heat, then drop to low. Running 30 minutes on high and then low is a common pattern. Low settings often average a third or less of the rating, depending on the model.
  • A 1 kWh station can cover several nights of one queen blanket on low (≈40 W average × 8 h ≈ 320 Wh plus losses). Compare that with a heat pump, which can use about 6 kWh a night.
  • Safety: follow the blanket maker's instructions, don't fold or bunch it, and replace any that's more than about 10 years old or damaged. NZ and AU fire services publish electric blanket safety checks.
  • Any station's AC outlet works, because a blanket has no start surge. Check that the plug fits: the outlets on US-spec units won't take NZ/AU plugs. See NZ/AU stockists.

Runtime = Wh × 85% ÷ 40 W. A station's own standby draw lowers this at very light loads. If your station's 12 V output fits, a 12 V blanket avoids inverter losses. Specs are from brand product pages, re-checked 29 Oct 2026. Try your own figures in the runtime calculator.
