Charging honesty · Week 2

Parallel / dual charging — AC + solar (and AC + car)

Many mid stations advertise dual or parallel input: wall AC plus solar at the same time (sometimes AC + 12 V car). QuietWatt’s honesty: combined watts are almost always capped by the BMS, cloudy NZ can erase the solar half, and brands disagree on what “simultaneous” means. Formula shape + check label / listing — no invented combined watt limits.

Honesty first (read this)

  • Combined input ≠ AC-in + solar-in added blindly. A station rated for (example shape) “up to X W AC” and “up to Y W solar” may still enforce a lower total charge budget. QuietWatt will not invent that combined number — check the label / listing / manual for dual-charge or multi-input caps.
  • Hours still ≈ Wh need ÷ net charge watts. Dual only shortens refill when both paths are actually contributing and the BMS lets them stack. Path-by-path: AC vs solar charging speed.
  • Cloudy NZ derates solar hard. Winter / west-coast cloud can leave the solar half as a trickle while AC does the real work — dual marketing photos are brochure sun. Panel count: how many solar panels · controller class: MPPT vs PWM.
  • AC + car is usually AC-dominant. 12 V cigarette / Anderson paths are fuse-limited trickle class next to wall AC — honesty: 12V car charging. Do not assume car watts stack at full AC-in.
  • Pass-through while dual-charging adds heat and can slow net refill when loads run — pass-through charging.

Specs cited elsewhere on QuietWatt are from manufacturer pages (checked Oct 2026). Figures on this page are estimates / planning shapes — check current listing and the station label for AC input W, solar input W / Voc, car input, and dual-charge support. Not electrical advice.

Combined watt caps (feature class)

Input mix Planning shape What that means
AC + solar (dual) Often allowed on mid kits — confirm combined / priority rules Useful when shore is weak or sun is thin. BMS may prioritize AC, throttle solar, or hard-cap total W. Check listing / manual.
AC + 12 V car Car path usually small vs wall Road-day top-up while plugged at a campsite pedestal is the honest story — not “double AC speed.” See 12V car.
Solar + car (no AC) Both slow / weather-limited Off-grid recovery path; still capped by solar max + fuse-limited DC-in. Panel kit: how many panels.
Single input only Some SKUs refuse simultaneous inputs QuietWatt does not invent dual support — if the sheet is silent, assume one path at a time until the OEM confirms.

Spec decoder: power station specs explained. Station Wh still decides how long any refill takes once net input W is known — what size power station.

When dual / parallel charging shortens recharge

Weak shore + panels

Often helps

Limited campsite amp circuits + foldables can stack if dual is allowed and the combined cap is above AC-alone. Confirm OEM — estimate only.

Cloudy NZ + wall available

AC does the work

Dual can still nudge a grey-day refill, but do not plan storm recovery on brochure solar watts. Speed honesty: AC vs solar.

Clear sun + max AC-in

May hit BMS cap

If wall AC already saturates the charge budget, adding panels may do little until AC tapers near full. Check label / listing for combined limit.

Loads running (pass-through)

Net refill slower

Fridge / Starlink drawing AC while dual-charging means net Wh climb slower and fans work harder — pass-through.

QuietWatt will not invent a brand “AC + 400 W solar = X-hour full” without your listing’s AC-in, solar-in, combined cap, and real sun-hours.

Brand / BMS caveats (no invented watts)

  • EcoFlow / Anker / BLUETTI / Jackery all ship mid SKUs with dual-input marketing — feature mixes and combined caps differ by model and firmware. Compare lines elsewhere: EcoFlow vs BLUETTI · DELTA vs RIVER.
  • App toggles. Some units expose charge-rate caps or dual-input switches in the phone app — app honesty: app / Wi‑Fi / Bluetooth. Firmware can change behaviour after purchase.
  • Voc / connector class still gates solar. Wrong Voc or Anderson vs XT60 cable mistakes kill the solar half before “dual” matters — MPPT vs PWM · Anderson vs XT60.
  • Heat. High AC-in + solar + pass-through = fan noise and thermal throttle risk. Neighbour noise: apartment fan noise.

Stations QuietWatt already cites (confirm dual / combined caps)

Confirm published AC input watts, max solar input / Voc, car / DC input, and any dual / multi-charge combined limit on the current listing — QuietWatt does not invent your stacked refill rate.

Model Wh · notes Why it lands here Dual / combined input
EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus 1,024 Wh · LFP Fast wall-charge marketing class — dual AC+solar often advertised; confirm combined cap. Check label / listing / manual
Anker SOLIX C1000 1,056 Wh · LiFePO₄ Mid apartment kit — same rule: Wh ÷ net input W after BMS caps. Check label / listing / manual
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 1,070 Wh · LiFePO₄ Camping / solar-kit pairing common; confirm whether AC+solar is simultaneous on your SKU. Check label / listing / manual
BLUETTI Elite 100 V2 1,024 Wh ~1 kWh quiet class — dual-input wording still listing-dependent. Check label / listing / manual
