Charging honesty · Week 2

Wall AC charge speed vs solar recharge

How long to refill a portable station from the wall versus foldable / roof solar? QuietWatt’s honesty: hours ≈ Wh need ÷ net input watts, capped by the station’s published AC and solar input limits — cloudy NZ days derate hard, and dual charging (AC + solar) only helps when the BMS allows both. Formula + check listing; no invented “full in 1 hour from one panel” claims.

Honesty first (read this)

  • Hours to full ≈ usable Wh to refill ÷ net charge watts. Marketing “0–80% in X minutes” is often AC-wall at max input in a lab — not a cloudy campsite. Confirm AC input W and max solar W / Voc on the current listing.
  • Input watt limits cap everything. A 400 W panel nameplate cannot push more than the station’s max solar input (and real sun / angle / MPPT derate). Panel count honesty: how many solar panels · controller class: MPPT vs PWM.
  • Cloudy NZ is not brochure sun. Winter and west-coast cloud can drop peak sun-hours into a thin band — size for your climate, not a desert ad. Bundles QuietWatt tables: solar bundles under ~$1,500.
  • Pass-through while charging changes heat and net refill when loads run — honesty: pass-through charging. Car 12 V is a third (slow) path: 12V car charging.

Specs cited elsewhere on QuietWatt are from manufacturer pages (checked Oct 2026). Figures on this page are estimates / planning formulas — check current listing for AC input W, solar input W, and dual-charge support. Not electrical advice.

AC wall vs solar (feature class)

Path Planning shape What that means
Wall AC input Often hundreds of watts on mid kits — confirm SKU AC-in claim Fastest shore / apartment refill before a storm. Marketing “X-Stream / Hyper Flash” is wall speed, not solar.
Foldable / portable solar Nameplate W × real sun × angle × MPPT — often well under nameplate Day refill possible with enough panel + clear sky; cloudy NZ may be trickle. See how many panels.
Dual (AC + solar) Only if OEM allows simultaneous inputs; BMS may prioritize / cap Useful at a campsite with shore + panels, or topping while sun is weak — read the manual; QuietWatt does not invent dual rates.
12 V car / Anderson Fuse-limited trickle class Top-up on a road day — not wall-speed. Honesty: 12V car charging.

Spec decoder: power station specs explained. Station Wh still decides how long the refill takes once input W is known — what size power station.

Hours-to-full shape (no invented times)

~1 kWh @ ~500 W AC-in

~2 h class

Shape only: 1000 ÷ 500 ≈ 2 h before losses / taper. Replace with your listing’s AC input W. Estimate.

~1 kWh @ ~200 W solar net

~5 h+ sun

Shape only if you actually harvest ~200 W average — cloudy NZ may be far less. Panel kit: solar bundles.

While loads run

Net refill slower

Fridge or Starlink drawing AC while charging means net Wh climb slower — pass-through.

QuietWatt will not invent a brand “full in 60 minutes from solar” without your panel wattage, sun-hours, and the station’s max solar input from the current listing.

When dual charging (AC + solar) matters

  • Storm prep at home. Wall AC fills fast before the outage; solar is the post-grid recovery path if lines stay down.
  • Campsite with weak shore. Limited AC amps + panels can stack if the SKU allows dual input — confirm OEM; some units cap combined watts.
  • Cloudy NZ recovery. Dual can shorten a grey-day refill when shore exists; pure solar may need patience or more panel — MPPT vs PWM · how many panels.
  • Heat / fan cost. High AC-in + solar + pass-through loads = heat. Neighbour noise: quietest guides elsewhere on QuietWatt.

Stations QuietWatt already cites (confirm AC / solar input)

Confirm published AC input watts and max solar input / Voc on the current listing — QuietWatt does not invent your refill time.

Model Wh · notes Why it lands here AC / solar input
EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus 1,024 Wh · LFP Fast wall-charge marketing class — confirm AC-in and solar max on listing. Check current listing / manual
Anker SOLIX C1000 1,056 Wh · LiFePO₄ Mid apartment kit — same formula: Wh ÷ net input W. Check current listing / manual
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 1,070 Wh · LiFePO₄ Camping / stairs class — solar kit pairing common; confirm Voc window. Check current listing / manual
BLUETTI Elite 100 V2 1,024 Wh ~1 kWh quiet class — wall vs solar speed still listing-dependent. Check current listing / manual
