Whole-home backup vs portable power station
A suitcase LiFePO₄ station is not a transfer-switch whole-home backup. QuietWatt’s honesty: what a portable can keep alive (fridge + router + medical-class loads), what it cannot (central HVAC, whole-panel continuous kW), and when a fuel generator or a licensed electrician’s transfer setup still wins. Formula + check the listing — no invented Wh.
Honesty first (read this)
- Portable = plug loads into the station. You move cords to the box. You do not backfeed the house panel through a dryer outlet — that can kill line workers and violate code. Transfer switches and interlocks belong to licensed electrical work, not a shopping cart.
- Wh still rules runtime. Hours ≈ (rated Wh × ~0.85 usable) ÷ average watts — planning shape only, not a lab guarantee. Fridge cycling math: fridge runtime. Sizing: what size power station.
- Continuous watts ≠ peak surge. A fridge compressor start can spike above steady draw. Peak vs continuous honesty: sibling pages and the OEM continuous rating on the listing.
- Medical loads are power math only. CPAP / concentrator / fridge meds pages on QuietWatt are not clinical advice — talk to your clinician and read device manuals: medical device backup.
Specs cited elsewhere on QuietWatt are from manufacturer pages (checked Oct 2026). Figures on this page are estimates / planning formulas — check current listing. Not electrical, building-code, or medical advice.

Planning math (no invented Wh)
- Runtime hours ≈ (nameplate Wh × ~0.85) ÷ average W. Replace 0.85 with your own derate if the manual is clearer; QuietWatt will not invent a “keeps the whole house for 3 days” claim from a ~1 kWh suitcase.
- Essentials stack example (shape only): fridge average tens of watts cycling + router ~10–20 W class + lights/phones — often fits a ~1 kWh mid kit overnight with margin if you skip HVAC and cooking. Confirm your watt-meter numbers.
- Expand + solar stretches multi-day essentials without wiring the panel — still not whole-home HVAC. See expandable stations.
