Battery cycle life — claims vs reality
“3,000 cycles” on a product page is a manufacturer claim under a defined test (often to 70–80% remaining capacity, sometimes at a stated depth of discharge). It is not a calendar guarantee and not QuietWatt lab data. This page is the honesty layer under LiFePO₄ vs NMC.
What cycle claims usually mean
- A cycle ≈ one full charge–discharge equivalent as the OEM defines it — not “every time you plug in the fridge for an hour.” Partial discharges often count as fractions of a cycle (BMS-dependent).
- Endpoint matters. “3,000 cycles to 80%” ≠ forever at 100% capacity. After that endpoint the pack still works — with less Wh. Plan sizing with today’s Wh, not year-10 fantasy Wh — what size station · Wh class.
- LiFePO₄ (LFP) mid stations QuietWatt tracks often advertise ~3,000–4,000 cycles to 70–80% (e.g. Jackery Explorer 1000 v2, EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus, Anker SOLIX C1000 product copy). Classic NMC packs are commonly marketed closer to ~500–1,000. Those are nameplate claims — confirm on the current listing.

When “3,000 cycles” marketing misleads
- Depth of discharge (DoD). Lab cycles at 80% or 100% DoD are not the same as your shallow blackout dips — or worse, daily 0–100% van cycling in heat. Deeper + hotter usually ages faster.
- Heat is a silent killer. A pack left in a hot van, garage, or next to a space heater ages on the calendar even if cycle count is low. Cool, dry storage when idle.
- Pass-through / UPS mode can keep the inverter and cells warm under continuous float-like use — brand manuals differ. Honesty: pass-through charging.
- Calendar aging still happens. A station that sits unused for years still loses some capacity. Cycle scoreboards ignore the clock.
- Wrong Wh class still loses the job. Long cycle life does not start a window AC or buy multi-day fridge Wh — size first, then chemistry.
Cycle life vs calendar aging vs warranty
| Axis | What shoppers hear | Honesty framing |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle life (mfr claim) | “3,000 / 4,000 cycles” | Under OEM test protocol to a capacity endpoint — confirm DoD %, temperature, and remaining % on the datasheet / current listing. |
| Calendar aging | Often omitted in ads | Time + heat + high state of charge can reduce capacity with few cycles. Idle packs still age. |
| DoD / use pattern | “Unlimited daily use” | Shallow apartment outages ≠ daily 100% DoD camping. Hard use + heat compresses real life vs brochure cycles. |
| Warranty | “X-year warranty” | Warranty length ≠ cycle count. Read what capacity % is covered, exclusions (heat, water, mods), and claim process. Brand axes: EcoFlow vs BLUETTI · Anker vs Jackery. |
| Expand / multi-day | “Just add a battery” | Extra modules add Wh and another aging asset — expandable / multi-day. Inverter watts usually stay with the main unit. |
