How to size a power station for CPAP overnight

Overnight CPAP backup is a label × hours job — not a “best 500Wh” guess. Read the CPAP nameplate (and humidifier / heated-hose adders), run the QuietWatt Wh formula with inverter loss, then match a pure-sine station class. Sibling shortlist: CPAP overnight. Not medical advice.

Medical-device disclaimer (read this)

  • Not medical advice. QuietWatt is shopping / Wh math research only. We do not recommend therapy settings, diagnose conditions, or guarantee any machine will run a full night in your room.
  • Confirm with your supplier / OEM. Backup plans belong with your equipment supplier and the CPAP manufacturer’s documentation — not with a directory page.
  • Prefer pure sine (or an approved DC path). Waveform and DC-cable rules are OEM-specific — pure sine wave · product shortlist: CPAP overnight · broader context: medical device backup.

Specs QuietWatt cites elsewhere come from manufacturer product pages (checked Oct 2026). Figures on this page are planning formulas — check your appliance label and the current station listing before buying. Estimates labelled.

The Wh math (honesty first)

  • Read the CPAP label / meter first. QuietWatt will not invent a CPAP watt number as fact. Use the nameplate, the maker’s power-consumption sheet, or a plug-in watt meter on your settings.
  • Add humidifier / heated-hose draw if you use them. Comfort heaters are often the big overnight lever — blower-only vs humidified nights can differ a lot. That is a settings / power observation, not a therapy recommendation.
  • Raw overnight Wh ≈ average watts × sleep hours. Example shape only (replace with your label): if your metered average were W for H hours → W × H Wh before losses.
  • Station Wh you need ≈ (label watts × hours) ÷ 0.85 — QuietWatt’s rule-of-thumb for inverter loss + a little reserve (not a lab factor). Flip it: usable Wh ≈ nameplate Wh × ~0.85; hours ≈ usable Wh ÷ average watts.
  • Multi-night camping multiplies nights (and any daytime idle / phone / light loads). Solar refill is a separate path — how many solar panels · camping station.

Worked math always uses your watts × hours, then ÷ ~0.85. QuietWatt will not invent a “runs 8 hours” claim for your machine without your label. General sizing: what size power station · class map: Wh class guide.

DC cable vs inverter honesty

  • Approved DC cable / converter (when the CPAP maker sells one) can skip the AC inverter and cut conversion losses. Polarity, voltage, and OEM approval matter — QuietWatt will not invent pinouts.
  • Wall brick into station AC is the common path. Size Wh with the ~0.85 usable rule above, and prefer a station that lists pure sine AC — pure sine wave.
  • UPS / EPS transfer can matter if the grid flickers while you sleep — naming honesty: EPS vs UPS mode · pass-through charging. Still verify with your own setup.
  • Bedroom noise is a neighbour / partner test, not a brochure dB crown — apartment fan noise · apartment station.

When ~300–500 Wh class may be enough vs larger

Class bands are planning gates — not guarantees. Replace every watt with your label. Station Wh and continuous watts: check current listing.

Planning class When it may fit (honesty) When to size up Where QuietWatt goes deeper
~300–500 Wh class Often discussed for lower overnight draw (e.g. blower-leaning nights, shorter sleep windows, or DC-cable paths) — only after your Wh math clears with reserve. Humidifier + heated hose on, multi-night camping without reliable daytime refill, or stacking phone/light loads. Marginal math → next class. ~1 kWh class Common buffer for humidified overnight + margin, or one night with comfort heaters on — still run the formula. Several humidified nights off-grid, or shared station duty (fridge + CPAP) — see fridge honesty separately. 1 kWh compare · apartment station
Expandable / multi-day Camping weeks, van life, or wanting a spare pack without buying a second inverter chassis. Weight / stairs may dominate — carry / Wh per kg. expandable / multi-day · camping station · battery cycle life

QuietWatt does not invent CPAP watts, station Wh, prices, or runtime hours. Confirm the appliance label and the official station page. Estimates / planning only.

Checklist before you buy

1. Meter or label

Your watts, not ours

Note blower-only vs humidifier vs heated-hose averages for a typical night. OEM docs beat brochure guesses.

2. Run the formula

(W × H) ÷ 0.85

That is the station Wh floor with inverter reserve. Multi-night: multiply nights or plan solar refill.

3. Match waveform + noise

Pure sine · bedroom

Pure sine (or approved DC). Fan honesty: apartment fan noise. Cycle / LFP longevity: battery cycle life.
