500 Wh vs 1,000 Wh vs 2,000 Wh — what actually lasts
Watt-hours buy time, not horsepower. AC watts start the fridge; Wh decides whether Wi‑Fi, a laptop, or food lasts past midnight. This page maps the three classes people actually shop — with real current models and labelled runtime estimates.
How to read Wh (without marketing math)
- Nameplate Wh ≠ usable Wh. Plan on roughly ~85% after inverter loss and battery reserve (rule of thumb, not a lab measurement).
- Estimate formula: usable Wh ÷ average watts ≈ hours. Example: 1,000 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 60 W ≈ ~14 h.
- Watts vs Wh. A 500 Wh box with 500 W AC may not start a fridge; a 2,000 Wh box with 2,400 W AC usually will. Match both.
- Duty cycle wins. A closed fridge averaging 50–80 W lasts far longer than the same fridge with the door open every ten minutes.
Specs below are from manufacturer product pages (checked Oct 2026). Runtime columns are estimates — confirm loads on your own nameplates before buying.
The three classes, side by side
One representative job per class. Example models are current SKUs already used across QuietWatt — not a sponsored ranking.
| Class | Typical Wh | Best for | Weak at | Example models | Approx. USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ~500 Wh Light | ≈450–600 Wh | Phones, modem/router, LED lights, laptop for a work block, short outages | Fridge overnight, multi-appliance blackouts, high surge starts |
EcoFlow RIVER 2 Max (512 Wh · 500 W · ~13 lb · LFP) Jackery Explorer 500 (518 Wh · 500 W · ~13–14 lb) |
~$250–400 |
| ~1,000 Wh Default | ≈1,000–1,100 Wh | Apartment overnight: fridge + Wi‑Fi + lights; CPAP sleep (specs-only); stairs-friendly carry | Multi-day outages without solar / extra battery; large older compressors on the tightest surge units |
Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 (1,070 Wh · 1,500 W · 23.8 lb) EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus (1,024 Wh · 1,800 W · expandable) BLUETTI Elite 100 V2 (1,024 Wh · 1,800 W) Anker SOLIX C1000 (1,056 Wh · 1,800 W · expandable) |
~$380–900 |
| ~2,000 Wh Multi-day | ≈2,000–2,100 Wh | Fridge through a long outage, campervan weekends, WFH + food + lights, higher continuous AC | Walk-up stairs (often 40–60+ lb); price and footprint |
Jackery Explorer 2000 v2 (2,042 Wh · 2,200 W · ~39.5 lb) EcoFlow DELTA 2 Max (2,048 Wh · 2,400 W · ~50 lb) BLUETTI AC200L (2,048 Wh · 2,400 W · ~62 lb) |
~$900–1,900 |

Runtime estimates by class
Same loads, three battery sizes. Usable energy assumed at ~85% of nameplate. Figures are estimates for planning — not manufacturer guarantees.
| Load (avg draw) | ~500 Wh class ~425 usable Wh |
~1,000 Wh class ~850 usable Wh |
~2,000 Wh class ~1,700 usable Wh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi router / modem (~10 W) | ~40 h estimate | ~85 h estimate | ~170 h estimate |
| LED lights + phones + modem (~30 W) | ~14 h estimate | ~28 h estimate | ~56 h estimate |
| Laptop work block (~60 W) | ~7 h estimate | ~14 h estimate | ~28 h estimate |
| Fridge duty cycle (~60 W avg, door shut) | ~7 h estimate — often too short for overnight food safety; also check surge | ~14 h estimate — overnight class for many apartments | ~28 h estimate — multi-day buffer in mild weather |
| CPAP-class draw (~50 W, no humidifier) specs only — not medical advice | ~8.5 h estimate — marginal for a full night | ~17 h estimate — comfortable overnight band | ~34 h estimate — multi-night / humidifier headroom |
| Mixed blackout kit (~120 W: fridge + Wi‑Fi + lamp + laptop bursts) | ~3.5 h estimate | ~7 h estimate | ~14 h estimate |

Estimates use usable Wh ≈ nameplate × 0.85, then ÷ average watts. Real runtimes vary with inverter efficiency, temperature, battery age, and how often the fridge compressor starts.
Quick pick
- Stairs + short outages: ~500 Wh class (RIVER 2 Max) or the lightest 1 kWh (Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 at 23.8 lb).
- First apartment kit: ~1,000 Wh class — see Night 4 brand compare and Night 1 blackouts.
- Fridge past one night: ~2,000 Wh class — see Night 2 fridge runtime.
- Van / freedom camping: often 1–2 kWh + solar — see Night 5 campervan.
