Best portable power stations for campervan & NZ freedom camping

Quiet box power for vans that park overnight without a generator — 12 V fridge, phone/laptop, lights, and a folding solar panel for multi-day freedom camping. Ranked by carry weight, max solar input, and real Wh — not “van life” marketing.

What a campervan station actually has to do

  • Fridge first. A typical 12 V compressor fridge averages ~30–60 W while cycling. Overnight food safety is the floor; everything else (phones, lights, laptop) is the bonus.
  • Solar recovers the day. On NZ South Island / AU free camps you often cannot idle or use a petrol generator. Max solar input (W) and MPPT voltage window decide whether a sunny lunch recovers last night’s fridge draw.
  • Weight and footprint. Small vans and weight ratings punish 30+ kg boxes. Sub‑12 kg ~1 kWh units win when you move the station seat-to-seat or take it into a cabin.
  • Quiet / no fumes. Freedom camping and DOC-adjacent spots reward silent LiFePO₄ stations. Gas generators are the wrong tool here.

NZ / AU freedom-camping checklist

12 V fridge overnight

~1 kWh class

At ~40–50 W average compressor duty, ~1,000 Wh is a realistic overnight + morning buffer. Hot weather and frequent door opens shorten that — budget solar for day two.

Folding panels

Match max solar W

Jackery tops out at 400 W input; Anker 600 W; EcoFlow and BLUETTI Elite 100 V2 accept up to 1,000 W. Stay inside each unit’s Voc / Vmp window (typically ~11–60 V on these models).

Weight in a small van

Jackery 10.8 kg

Lightest of the four. EcoFlow 12.5 kg and BLUETTI 11.5 kg stay one-person liftable. Anker ~12.9 kg is fine strapped under a seat but least “grab and go.”

Local power

230 V SKUs

Manufacturer pages above are often US 120 V listings. For NZ/AU campervans, buy the regional 230 V model (or a local retailer) so AC outlets and chargers match the van and campsite pedestals.

Freedom camping still means following local bylaws, DOC / park rules, and self-contained vehicle requirements where they apply. A battery station does not change those rules — it just replaces a noisy generator.

Who wins for which trip

Lightest van kit

Jackery

10.8 kg and 1,070 Wh. Accept 400 W solar ceiling if weight is the constraint.

Most solar today

EcoFlow / BLUETTI

Both publish 1,000 W max solar. EcoFlow adds expansion and faster car charge; BLUETTI often wins on street price.

Grow for longer trips

EcoFlow

DELTA 3 Plus path toward ~5 kWh. Anker doubles once to 2.1 kWh. Jackery / Elite 100 V2 stay fixed.

Tightest budget

BLUETTI

Elite 100 V2 often under $500 with 1,000 W solar and fridge-friendly Wh — strong first van battery.
